An O-ring is a mechanical gasket or a circular sealing ring placed between two meeting surfaces to minimize frictional damage and consequent leakages if fluids are involved. In other words, it is a loop of elastomer which is designed to be seated in a groove and compressed when two or more parts are assembled, forming a seal at the interface. Helix Engineering is a top provider of high-quality seals and O-rings made of Viton o ring rubber.
Viton is a fluoropolymer elastomer and synthetic rubber compound, trademarked by DuPont under this brand name and is widely used to manufacture O-rings and other such molded, extruded goods. It is generically referred to as FKM (FPM, Viton, Fluorel), a group of fluorocarbon-based fluoro elastomer materials defined by the ASTM International standard D1418.
Advantages of viton rubber o ring
Viton Elastomers play an important role in the sealing industry. It has a wide range of applications due to its following properties.
- Excellent chemical compatibility
- Wide temperature range
- Low compression set
- Low gas permeability and ageing characteristics.
Specifications of O ring manufacturing
Temperature Range
Viton® O-rings can withstand temperatures ranging from -20°C to 210°C.
Viton® seals are prone to failure below -15°C in dynamic applications, as they become inflexible and hard.
General Suitability
Viton® seals and O-rings are best suited for a variety of sealing applications that require high temperature and chemical resistance.
Preferred Environment of Usage
Applications involving contact with petroleum oils, acids, silicone fluids and gases, halogenated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride), aromatic hydrocarbons
Viton® O-ring does not perform well in applications where it comes in contact with Ketones, low molecular weight organic acids, superheat steam, low molecular weight esters and ethers and Phosphate ester-based hydraulic fluids
Environmental Properties
There are two properties of Viton® rubber that makes it far superior to Nitrile.
- O-rings made of Viton rubber has a wide range of chemical resistance including mineral acids, fuels, and oils
- It is also highly resistant to oxidation, UV exposure, fungus, weather, ozone, and mould formation.
These seals and O-rings are designed to resist most oils and lubricants, especially the ones that are petroleum-based. Viton® O-rings are also suitable for high vacuum applications.
Applications of Viton O rings
Viton® O-rings are used in Oil & Gas, Aircraft, Automobiles, Vacuum and other mechanical devices that require maximum resistance to high temperatures and to different types of fluids.
